Hair transplants entail surgical removal of healthy hair follicles from one part of the scalp and then embedding those follicles into a balding area of the scalp. Though hair transplants have been hyped up by several clinics, results can be hit-and-miss. Considering the high price tag of the procedure, it is far from becoming an ideal hair loss treatment.

A new robot hair transplant doctor offers advancement on existing hair transplant methods and techniques. It is a robotic device which can be used to perform the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique by harvesting hair follicles from one part of a hair loss patient’s head, before implantation, into a balding area of the scalp. FUE has been around for some time and is often used during manual hair transplant procedures.

This robotic system automates parts of the follicle extraction process, harvesting the hair in greater quantities and with better precision than is possible using manual methods. The robot is controlled by a surgeon using computer imaging techniques, but is only used for the extraction of hair follicles. The actual transplantation of donor follicles into the recipient area of the patient’s head will still be carried out entirely by human surgeons.

One of the major disadvantages of a hair transplant surgery is that it’s an invasive procedure and carries the same risks of infections and complications as other forms of surgery. While the manufacturers say that the robotic device will make the process less invasive, the actual transplantation part of the procedure will remain unchanged, requiring the manual grafting of follicles onto the scalp.

Another downside of hair transplants is the exorbitant cost involved. It is not yet known how much a hair transplant using the robotic system will cost, but it is likely to be more than conventional procedures. Following a hair transplant, the hair around the transplant still needs to be maintained by preventive treatments on an ongoing basis.

Lastly, despite the exorbitant cost of a hair transplant, the outcome is far from guaranteed. Hair clinics who offer hair transplants will often go out of their way to assure natural youthful looking hair that will last long. However, this is not always the case, and sometimes the results can be far from satisfying.
