hroughout the course of history, attitudes towards baldness have been overwhelmingly negative. Living with alopecia can be difficult in a culture that views hair as a sign of youth and good health.

Millions of men and women suffer in silence from hair loss and thinning hair. It is a serious condition with profound emotional and psychological effects. Most of the research shows that people with alopecia have higher levels of depression and anxiety. For many, hair loss brings feelings of shame, despair, and crippled self-esteem. One popular hair loss treatment is the hair transplant.

Hair transplants are complex and delicate surgical procedures. The aim of this procedure is to regain the lost looks by regrowing hair at scalp areas where hair loss has occurred. After the transplant, a hair care routine needs to be followed which will ensure the long term success of the procedure. Along with the medication prescribed by the surgeon, he also gives health teachings on hair care and the importance of compliance to treatment regimen to ensure that the procedure remains a successful one.

The areas of hair transplants will have scars which need to heal; hence, after a hair transplant, hard combing of the area of transplant should not be done. Even combing should be done with utmost care so as not to harm the grafts and cause permanent damage to the follicle. It’s not advisable for hairpieces to be used for a few weeks until the incisions made while planting the grafts have healed. Even if the incisions have healed, always use good-quality hair brushes and wide-toothed combs. Do not use hair brushes on wet hair to detangle them. Use a wide-toothed comb instead.

Shampooing is necessary after hair transplant. Surgeons insist that the area of transplant be shampooed daily to keep the area clean since this will prevent the area from getting infected and also ensure quick healing of the scars. While shampooing, care should be taken not to scrub the scalp hard and the shampoo should be rinsed with gentle pouring of water rather than washing under the shower. Most surgeons prescribe topical ointments to be applied, while some may ask to leave the area as it is.

With hair transplants, one should refrain from using styling products, blow dryer, hair dyes and so on. The use of strong chemicals should be avoided as this may destroy hair structure and certain hair properties. Be wary of the presence of these chemicals on the hair products you’re using. In the same way, blow dryers pose a threat to your hair if used every single day. Exposing hair to direct heat predisposes it to breakage.
